A view of the waiting room
Office windows are set high enough to admit light without offering a clear view from the pavement. Inside, chairs face a desk rather than each other. The waiting room arranges strangers into a common pause, each holding an envelope whose contents explain a different reason for being there.
The harbor translated
A ship becomes an arrival date, a damaged load becomes a claim and a building becomes the description attached to an agreement. These translations are useful, but they flatten the physical world. Someone who works beside the water may recognize a place in a document only after an old local name appears in the final paragraph.
A signature requested again
In the county stories, an office returns a form because a signature sits in the wrong box. The new copy arrives clean, while the previous one remains folded inside it to explain the delay. Wick Street's paperwork preserves the official version and the inconvenient history of producing it, sometimes in the same envelope.
From the fictional county archive
The enclosed copy replaces the earlier form. Please keep the accompanying letter; its reference number remains valid.
