The line beneath the paint
Some doors have been repainted; others have been scrubbed until the wood is pale. The old level returns as a difference in texture or the shape of a repaired panel. The line is not a uniform monument. Each household has dealt with it differently, depending on materials, money and the time available for work.
The shelf moved higher
Inside the houses, small arrangements hold the memory of water. Papers are kept on a higher shelf. A spare board leans beside the entrance. These are ordinary household decisions, passed on when someone new takes a room. A warning can survive as a habit after the story that explained it has shortened.
Comparing repair lists
Neighbors compare estimates over the shared wall. One request names a damaged floor; another names a blocked drain. A council form treats them as separate problems because they belong to different addresses. The district's fiction follows the effort to describe a shared event through a system that insists on one household at a time.
From the fictional county archive
The mark on the door has been painted over. The photograph in the envelope shows the level before the work began.
