The dry patch
Rain reaches the outer steps but leaves a rectangle of dry stone close to the doors. People waiting for appointments occupy it without speaking, shifting as another person arrives. The space has no seats and was not designed as a waiting room. Weather has given it that function anyway.
Three doors from one landing
A messenger can climb the correct steps and still choose the wrong office. The brass plates use similar lettering, while an old directory lists a tenant who moved upstairs. Staff are accustomed to redirecting envelopes, sometimes adding a penciled arrow instead of returning the item to its sender.
A receipt for the handover
The county story follows a delivery acknowledged at the entrance rather than at a desk. The receiving name belongs to someone temporarily helping another office. The arrangement is innocent but poorly described by the standard receipt. The steps become a place where practical cooperation leaves a more ambiguous written trace than anyone intended.

Second door on the landing, not the office named on the old board. Obtain the receiving clerk's full signature.
