The approach before the bridge
From the waiting lane, the bridge is partly hidden by signs and the booth roof. A traveler can be close to the crossing without yet seeing its full length. The county fiction follows that compressed moment of arrival, when the city is visible but still separated from the person approaching it.
A small transaction in a long journey
The toll is a brief exchange. For the traveler it belongs to a larger trip; for the booth it is one entry among many. The same crossing can therefore be remembered through a conversation, a receipt, the weather or a delay. None of those accounts needs to contain all the others.
The copy carried away
A receipt travels into Palewater while its counterpart stays behind. Their later histories diverge immediately. One is folded into a wallet; the other enters a stack of paper. The archive stories use that simple separation to connect a fixed place with lives that continue moving after the gate has lifted.
From the fictional county archive
Retain the damaged receipt roll with the daily bundle. A torn edge is not a reason to discard the printed copy.
