Case 35: Toll
An opening brief from the fictional Coldmere County case files. Cold for 2 years, 5 months. This introduction contains no report, evidence inventory or closing scene.
Bureau opening brief
Elizondo, Serafin. 74. Thirty-one years a collector in the Causeway's booths; retired to No. 12 Tollgate Row, behind the plaza. Found at twenty to eight on a Saturday evening in August, two years ago, at the pull-off at the far end of the Causeway, by a long-haul driver pulling in for the night. Dr. Marchetti: heat illness. Window noon to 4:00 PM Saturday. He did not drive. The Palewater police put him in a van that crossed on a plate the plate office had never issued, could not find the van, and filed it open. His phone went to property locked. The lab has opened it. This year Palewater records asked the toll office for its camera log, his lawyer for her file, and three people where they were that Saturday. The camera log stands. Three names. -V
