Bureau opening brief
Gouveia, Madalena. 59. Kept Gouveia's, the filling station and night counter on the Causeway road, half a mile inside the toll plaza, twenty-four years. Found at five past six on a Saturday morning in May, two years ago, in the yard behind it, by her day hand coming to open. Dr. Marchetti: a single sharp-force injury, death within minutes. Window 11:30 PM Friday to 2:30 AM Saturday. The Palewater police looked for a driver from Coldmere who came in over the Causeway after midnight and asked the way to her counter. They wrote to Coldmere twice for the car's keeper and had no answer. They asked the toll office for its night sheets, and the sheets never reached the file. It was filed open. Her phone went to property locked. The lab has opened it. Her day hand brought in his own. This year Palewater records asked the toll office for its night sheets from booths 2 and 3, the harbor office at Marina Sol for its night book, and five people where they were. The car's owner is named in the Overtime file. The night sheets stand. Five names. -V
