The scale of a pale surface
Without trees or close buildings, a track offers few references for judging how far it runs. A marker can look near until a person begins walking toward it. In the county fiction, residents describe journeys through known turns and familiar objects rather than through the apparent distance to a destination.
A route that leaves little behind
Wind alters the visible surface. A wheel mark remains in one patch and vanishes in another, giving a single journey an uneven trace. The district's stories treat that quality as atmosphere and landscape, not as an invitation to infer a case solution from the artwork. The Flats is a place before it is a clue.
The practical written map
A local sketch may include a shelter, an old post or the end of a surfaced road while omitting a broad feature printed prominently on the county map. The difference is one of purpose. One document describes the landscape; the other helps someone make a particular trip through it and return.
From the fictional county archive
Use the marked track beside the shelter. The line visible across the basin is an old surface mark, not the road.
