The replacement roll
Receipt rolls are stored in a cupboard whose latch needs lifting before it will open. A new worker learns that detail from a handwritten note, not from the supply list. The office is full of such practical knowledge, attached to objects at the point where a person will need it.
A window between two tasks
The office window faces the booths, but a shelving unit blocks part of the view from the desk. Someone can sort records or watch a queue, depending on where they stand. In the county fiction, the room's ordinary furniture explains the limits of what any one person can remember about the crossing.
The request for a duplicate
A traveler asks for proof of a crossing after losing the original receipt. The office needs a date and enough detail to narrow the search. The person remembers the weather and an unfinished conversation more clearly than the number on the slip. Two ways of remembering the same event meet across the counter.
