The long way around a fence
A yard can make two nearby buildings surprisingly far apart. The safe pedestrian route follows fences, gates and designated crossings, turning a short line on a plan into a long walk. Workers judge the distance by the route available rather than by what they can see from an office window.
Before the departure
The night train gathers its significance gradually. A wagon is positioned, a form arrives and someone checks which load will wait. The county stories focus on those preparations rather than on a dramatic departure. Most of the work required to move freight is completed before the movement itself becomes visible.
Paper ahead of the load
A document can reach an office before the wagon it describes. The clerk puts it aside, leaving a record of something expected rather than something received. Later readers may not see that distinction unless the receiving mark was added. Brannock's written atmosphere comes from these mismatched speeds of travel through the same system.

Arrival paperwork received. Do not mark the consignment complete until the yard confirms the wagon is present.
