The stones on the table
The hut's paperweights are stones collected nearby. They differ enough in shape that regular users have preferences: one lies flat, another is easy to lift with cold fingers. The smallest belongs at the corner nearest the door, where a brief gust reaches the table whenever someone enters.
A measurement with a viewpoint
A sketch marks a distant post by the way it lines up with the shelter window. Taken outside, the alignment no longer works. The county story follows a reader who assumes the drawing describes the ground alone, then realizes that the room itself is part of the method used to make it.
What gets carried back
Field sheets are checked before leaving, but small annotations can remain on the wall map. The work exists partly in the folder and partly in the place where it was done. When the shelter is closed for repair, someone must decide which marks to copy and which were only temporary aids to seeing.
From the fictional county archive
Alignment taken from the east window. The penciled line should not be read as a track across the basin.
