A promise painted on a shutter
The attractions announce their pleasures even when their entrances are boarded. A picture of an impossible prize sits above a counter covered with dust. The pier's cheerfulness has not been replaced by something else; it has simply been left outside after the audience went home. Wind moves through gaps that music once made easy to ignore.
The winter work
Closure still requires a staff of tasks. A hinge must be tightened, a window checked and a loose panel carried somewhere dry. A maintenance list describes the district through failures and repairs, producing a second map beneath the illustrated one sold to visitors. Its landmarks are a leaking roof and the outlet that no longer works.
The last ticket in the roll
In the county fiction, a ticket roll is put away before it reaches its final number. The next season is meant to resume where the previous one stopped. That small promise sits in a drawer through months of weather. The paper records a continuity that the empty boards outside cannot yet demonstrate.
