The back way up
Visitors approach along drives designed to reveal a house slowly. Deliveries take the shorter climb beside the walls. At that side of the estate there are practical details: a drain that catches leaves, a bell for the kitchen and the scuffed place where a bicycle rests during a call.
A room for giving things away
The foundations occupy quiet offices with noticeboards that face inward. Applications arrive from parts of Coldmere whose names sound different when spoken across these desks. The county fiction follows the ordinary work inside: opening envelopes, recording an amended request, finding a letter whose recipient no longer works in the building.
The name on the gate
An estate's name can outlast several owners. Tradespeople remember the old name because it remains on their account books. A newer sign is useful to visitors but confusing to someone carrying a repaired chair. Merrow Hill's apparent permanence is assembled from such small, unresolved changes in how an address is written.

Please retain the earlier address on the reply envelope. The post room is still using the old entrance.
