Signs facing the wall
The booth is too small to display its stored signs. They stand with their painted faces turned inward to protect the lettering, leaving a row of plain backs visible through the window. The most cheerful room on the pier has become a collection of wooden rectangles, each waiting to recover its message.
A map with a repair on it
The visitor map is pinned above a list of maintenance jobs. A penciled mark on the map directs a worker to a loose board rather than to an attraction. It uses the cheerful drawing as a work plan, crossing a distinction the printer never anticipated. By spring, the graphite will need to be removed without rubbing away the color.
The key that fits nothing here
A spare key hangs from a label naming a booth farther along the pier. Its home has been repaired and its lock changed, but nobody wants to discard the old key without checking. The story leaves it hanging, an ordinary precaution that slowly takes on the appearance of a deliberate keepsake.
