The shared landing
A landing belongs to several homes and therefore never quite belongs to anyone. Shoes, an empty bottle crate and a chair awaiting repair accumulate until a notice asks for the passage to be cleared. The notice is polite. Its underlining is not. Rain taps the stairwell window with a sound heard in more than one kitchen.
Listening through a building
Pipes carry noise unevenly. A tap upstairs can sound nearer than a door across the hall, and a heavy step travels through a beam before it reaches the stairwell. In the fiction, neighbors learn habits through these imperfect transmissions. Familiarity grows without a clear view of the person being heard.
The repair request
The housing office asks for one fault per form. Residents put several on the back because the problems share a cause: water enters above one window and appears below another. A building manager folds the forms together with a paper clip. The official categories separate what the building itself has connected.
From the fictional county archive
The spare bulb is in the meter cupboard. If you use it, write that here so the next person does not climb the stairs for nothing.
