Bureau opening brief
Fielding, Nerys. 56. Senior clerk of the public counter at the Records Office on the Marble Mile, twenty-seven years. Found at five past seven on a Friday morning in April, nearly five years ago, in the goods lift at the back of the building, by the day porter. Dr. Bell: a crush injury, in the goods lift; death within minutes. Window 8:30 PM Thursday to midnight. Fog. The team closed it that June as an accident at work: cartons, after hours, alone. The lift was sound, and nobody asked again. Her phone went to property locked; the lab has opened it. One of the names has given us his old phone. This year the Bureau asked a printer on Tipstaff Lane for its delivery book, the Records Office for its stationery book, its counter book and an answer to our letter, the county's estates office for its figures, CurlewBank for two accounts, and five people where they were that Thursday. Mr. Alder sent up papers from the records basement, with a note of his own. The books stand. Five names. -V
