Work spread into the passage
A long net cannot always be repaired within a small room. On dry days, work extends into the sheltered lane, and neighbors adjust their route around it. The passage remains public in principle and negotiated in practice. A task can be resumed the next morning only if the weather and the needs of other doorways allow it.
The borrowed spool
Tools travel between workshops without a formal loan system. A chalk mark beside a door records where something went, then disappears after the item returns. The county fiction follows one borrowed spool through several hands, showing a network of assistance that would be almost invisible in a business account.
Names for the same flight
Residents identify the stairs by a workshop, a bend or the kind of work once done there. A formal street sign supplies another name. The district's written directions often contain both, because a person asking at the harbor may hear a different version from someone living halfway up the climb.
From the fictional county archive
The long needle is next door. I have left the smaller one here so the repair can continue before I return.
