The town's quieter edge
A lane can lose its pavement without appearing to leave the neighborhood. Sheds, gardens and stacked wood continue along it before the forest becomes unmistakable. In the county fiction, the transition is understood locally through chores and ownership: where a cart is stored, whose fence needs repair, which gate must be closed.
The map under glass
A reading room keeps a local map beneath a protective sheet. Residents point to places with a finger while describing names that do not appear in print. The map is accurate at its own scale, but conversation supplies another layer, full of remembered uses and routes convenient to particular homes.
The bundle waiting to be carried
Messages travel inland with people already making a trip. An envelope can wait at a wood store until someone heads toward the right lane. Briarward's stories follow that informal delivery system, where a route is attached to a person and a person may change plans. The district is connected, just not always by a timetable.

The letter is for the house beyond the second gate. If you are only going as far as the clearing, leave it here.
