The map that cannot be marked
The glass protects the printed sheet from damp fingers and spilled tea. It also prevents residents from adding corrections directly. They place notes along the frame instead, creating a ring of practical amendments around a map that remains visually unchanged. A visitor must decide which note refers to which part of the landscape.
A route drawn for one person
A sketch to a particular house may begin with 'leave from here' rather than with a named street. Removed from the room, that instruction loses its anchor. The county story follows a folded drawing carried home and read again later, when the reader can no longer remember exactly where the first line began.
Keeping the old edition
The room retains an older map because residents still ask about names missing from the newer one. The two editions are not rivals. They answer different questions about the same place, showing how a district can change its printed description without immediately changing the vocabulary of the people who live there.
From the fictional county archive
Please leave the older sheet in the flat drawer. The new edition omits the path names used in the correspondence.
