A gate without a barrier
The district takes its name from an older entrance that no longer controls the road. Its stone sides remain useful for shelter and directions. Carriers say they will meet at the gate even when they intend to stop beside the shop several doors farther on. The place name has widened beyond the structure that created it.
The load divided in town
A cart arriving from the moor may carry goods for several addresses. At Moor Gate the load is divided, and the onward journeys become smaller and less formal. One parcel goes with a shop assistant, another waits for collection and a third is returned because its recipient moved without telling the sender.
The weather brought indoors
Wet coats hang in the yard office while drivers explain delays. The written record reduces those accounts to a short note, but the room preserves the weather physically through muddy floors and steaming cloth. The district's fiction places those two records beside each other: what was written about the journey and what the journey left in the room.
