The tree inside the boundary
A mature tree stands beside a fence that bends around it. The bend is obvious on the ground but simplified on an old plan. When the fence needs repair, two owners discover that their copies draw the line differently. The district's fiction begins with a practical question about a post, not a grand dispute over the whole forest.
Timber with a destination
Cut wood is stacked by intended use as well as by size. Pieces reserved for a particular repair carry chalk marks that rain can remove. Workers renew the marks because an anonymous stack is easier to sell or move by mistake. The written destination keeps a future building attached to material still lying in a yard.
The sound beyond the last house
The forest edge changes the town's acoustics. Work can be heard through trees without a clear view of its source. Residents learn broad patterns rather than exact locations. These stories let the place remain partially obscured, acknowledging that familiarity with an environment does not make every sound in it fully explainable.
From the fictional county archive
Inspect the fence beside the living tree before ordering posts. The straight line on the older plan does not show the existing bend.
