A temporary address for a boat
A vessel under repair acquires a yard location in addition to its name. Deliveries are sent to the shed number, and visitors ask which side of the basin it occupies. If the work requires a move, the boat can change address without making a journey anyone would describe as travel.
The piece kept for a pattern
Damaged parts are not immediately discarded. They provide dimensions, curves and hole positions for replacements. A shed can therefore look full of broken objects while containing exactly what its workers need. In the county fiction, usefulness depends on knowing whether an item is waste, evidence of a problem or the pattern for its solution.
The agreed extra task
A repair expands when another fault is found. The original estimate remains, joined by a note describing the addition and the conversation that approved it. Cooper's Basin tells stories through such layers of work, where a finished object carries decisions made at different stages and written down with different degrees of formality.
From the fictional county archive
Retain the damaged fitting until the replacement has been compared against it. Do not clear the pattern shelf with the scrap.
