The departure everyone can see
The landing is visible from several shops, so people time errands by watching the boat rather than by checking a clock. A vessel at the steps does not always mean a departure is imminent. Supplies may still be coming down, or the crew may be waiting for the water to make a different part of the landing usable.
The room between shores
The waiting room contains notices intended for both local residents and people unfamiliar with the crossing. Instructions obvious to one group are crucial to the other. A handwritten addition explains where large parcels should be left, using a landmark that has been renamed on the printed plan beside it.
A return journey left open
Some travelers know which boat they intend to take back; others must finish an errand first. The district's fiction follows this difference in certainty. A return ticket can express a plan without establishing when the person holding it will reappear, leaving a small paper object to stand for a journey still being decided.

The vessel at the landing may be loading stores. Listen for the boarding call before taking parcels down the steps.
