A line that needs a date
A shoreline on a drawing looks settled. At the estuary, its usefulness depends on when and under what conditions it was observed. Local records place dates close to the measurements because the landscape can make an undated line misleading. The ward's fiction gives geography a temporal dimension without turning the stories into real navigation advice.
The office beside the view
Clerks can look from a chart to the water through the same window. The comparison is not always reassuring. A bank exposed outside may be faintly indicated on paper, while a printed feature is hidden beneath the tide. The two accounts serve different purposes and cannot be made identical by looking harder.
Corrections carried outward
A revised notice must reach the people who copied the old version. Posting it in the office is only the beginning. Someone sends a note to the ferry room; another speaks to a repair yard. Estuary Ward's stories follow the social work required to make a written correction travel beyond the desk where it began.
From the fictional county archive
Retain the observation date with this sketch. The exposed bank shown here is not a permanent outline of the channel.
