The drawing laid beside the part
A customer's sketch supplies measurements but leaves out a slight curve visible in the damaged original. The worker sets them together on the bench and marks the difference before cutting new material. The scene gives each record a useful limit: the drawing is precise about some things, while the broken part remains necessary for others.
The label that says keep
During a cleanup, a tagged fitting is moved away from scrap. Its value is not obvious from its condition. The note protects the relationship between the object and an unfinished job, preventing the shed's tidiness from erasing information the repair still needs. Order here means preserving exceptions as well as clearing space.
The return with the repaired boat
When the work is complete, the owner asks to keep the old part. It will no longer serve as a pattern in the shed, but may explain the repair to someone else. The object changes purpose again, becoming a physical account carried away alongside the cleaner, shorter description on the invoice.
From the fictional county archive
Keep until the owner has seen the completed replacement. The curved edge is not represented fully on the supplied drawing.
