Case 4: The Second Signature

An opening brief from the fictional Coldmere County case files. Cold for 5 years, 3 months. This introduction contains no report, evidence inventory or closing scene.

Bureau opening brief

Petrie, Rosalind. 61. Estate attorney, Petrie Law Office, Merrow Hill, thirty years. Found at her desk by her paralegal at 8:05 on a Monday morning, five years ago, two hours before she was due to read a late client's will. Dr. Bell: homicide, window 8:30 to 10:00 the night before. Back window broken, cash box empty. The original team worked it as a break-in and charged nobody. They read her phone for calls and nothing else. The client left two wills. The signature pages went to the probate court with her client papers. The notary's register went to the Secretary's office on a complaint and was never opened. All three are in this file. A notary writes her register as she works, in ink, in order. Four names. -V
