Case 5: High Water
An opening brief from the fictional Coldmere County case files. Cold for 3 years, 3 months. This introduction contains no report, evidence inventory or closing scene.
Bureau opening brief
Grange, Hester. 58. Sign-writer. Seven months aboard the houseboat Linnet, berth 9, Tallow Cut, the Narrows. Found in her bunk at 9:40 on a Thursday morning, three years ago, when officers forced the stern doors. They were bolted inside. Dr. Bell: drowned in the canal, in her coat, within minutes of going in. Window 11:30 PM to 2:00 AM. Her cabin was dry. The original team could not put a drowned woman behind her own bolt and filed it undetermined. Her phone was in her coat, full of the canal, and property logged it as ruined. The lab has dried it out. The Waterways Office kept a berth file and a chart of the water, drawn by machine. Nobody asked for either. Both are in this file. A machine does not guess. Three names. -V
