Tormey, Ilse. 52. Dockmaster of the Stacks for the Ashport Port Authority, eleven years. Found at 6:25 on a Thursday morning, two years ago, in the harbor against the fenders at berth 7, by the day gang coming on. The Ashport coroner's office: asphyxia, death within minutes; dead before she entered the water. Window 6:00 PM Wednesday to 1:00 AM Thursday. That Wednesday the dockers' local elected its secretary, and by custom its ballot box spent the night locked in her tower, with her. The port police had her alive at twenty past nine and attacked on her way down to the night ship. Nobody was charged. The ship sailed before she was found, and nobody asked for its log. Her phone went to property locked. Her daughter gave us the code, and brought in her own phone. Ashport records has the ship's deck log now, and statements from the quay. One name says he was in Coldmere that evening; that record is in the B-14 file. A ship's log is kept by men who never met her. It stands. Five names. -V
