A view that can disappear
On a clear day the stair seems designed for its prospect across the fjord. In fog, it becomes a sequence of wet treads between walls. The place has not changed, but the reason for pausing on the landing has. The county story shifts between those two experiences without giving either one priority.
The smooth section of rail
One part of the handrail has been replaced. It is lighter in color and slightly different in shape, easy to find by touch before it is noticed by sight. A pencil mark on the wall records the repair measurement. The line remains after the timber is installed because nobody is certain whether it is still needed.
A sound with no visible source
A bell heard from the landing can seem nearer than the buildings below. Weather and the stone passage change how it arrives. The fiction treats that uncertainty as part of living at the bay, where an ordinary sound can be familiar without giving an exact account of distance or direction.
