The marker beside the path
A stone that once defined an edge now stands within a widened footway. Walkers pass on both sides of it. The marker has not moved, but its relationship to everyday use has changed. A plan drawn from the stones alone would describe a different path from the one traced by years of footsteps.
The rubbing in an envelope
A resident takes a paper rubbing of a worn inscription rather than trying to copy it by eye. The sheet records texture as well as letters, preserving uncertainty instead of resolving it into a confident transcription. Later, the envelope holding it supplies the location that the rubbing itself does not name.
A repair that preserves a question
When the route is resurfaced, the stone is left visible within a small border. The work does not settle the old boundary's legal meaning. It simply keeps a physical piece of the district's history from disappearing beneath a practical improvement. The story gives preservation a limited, useful role rather than asking it to answer everything.
From the fictional county archive
Leave the marked stone exposed. Its position is recorded on the older plan, even though the present path passes around it.
