The Light at the Turn

A causeway maintenance note links a roadside light to a promise between two sisters.

The light at the turn came on earlier than the others. Drivers complained that it wasted power. When the timer was replaced, technician Mae found an old note requesting the difference, signed by a woman whose name appeared on a nearby memorial bench.

The woman's sister explained that she walked home before dawn and had once missed the turn during heavy mist. Her sister asked for the earlier light while a safer path was being built. The temporary arrangement outlasted the construction and eventually its author.

Mae checked the new path, spoke with the current residents and reset the timer to match the route now in use. She sent the sister a copy of the old note before filing it. The sister replied with a photograph of both women beside the unfinished path, laughing at a sign pointing into bare ground.

At the next inspection, Mae stood at the turn before dawn. The useful light now came from another position. She could see the path clearly, which was the point of the request all along, even though fulfilling it no longer meant keeping the original lamp exactly as it had been.
