Room Fourteen

A motel register preserves a guest's final request in a room that no longer exists.

Room fourteen became a linen store when the motel changed owners. In the old register, Rosa found a request to leave its curtains open. The guest had died before checking out, and the manager's note described the instruction as unusual.

Rosa expected a connection to the road outside. She stood in the doorway at different hours, trying to see what the guest might have watched. At sunset, the window reflected the room so clearly that the opposite wall appeared twice. A faded photograph above the bed occupied the center of both images.

The guest's daughter recognized the photograph as a view of the marina before its redevelopment. Her father had helped build the old landing. His eyesight was poor, and the open curtains gave him enough evening light to see it from the chair.

Rosa gave her the photograph when the linen shelves went up. The register stayed with the motel records, including the manager's description of an unusual request. Beside it, Rosa added the daughter's explanation in a separate note. Room fourteen vanished from the booking list, but its last guest finally acquired a reason for looking toward the window.
