The basin seen from above
From the hill, old lines on the ground appear to connect neatly. Walking among them reveals interruptions hidden by distance. The district's fiction uses this difference of scale to give the landscape two legitimate readings, one concerned with overall form and another with the practical obstacles encountered along a particular route.
A plan with an older purpose
Some drawings were made to describe water, others to allocate land or record repairs. Placed side by side, they emphasize different features of the same area. Survey Hill's rooms hold these documents together without pretending that one final sheet can replace the questions for which the earlier ones were created.
The person at the edge of a photograph
A family picture taken on the hill includes a useful view of the basin behind its subjects. Years later, that background becomes the reason someone asks for a copy. The story follows the change in what a photograph is being read for, allowing a private memory to contribute to a wider account of the town.
From the fictional county archive
Please include the full background when copying the photograph. The shoreline detail is outside the portion usually kept in the family print.
