A shop for part of the day
Some traders work behind permanent doors; others unfold their shop from a trolley. A painted number on the ground becomes an address only while the stall is there. The market's familiar arrangement is rebuilt each evening through small negotiations about space, shelter and the reach of an extension lead.
The light next door
One lamp often serves two counters. If a trader leaves early, the neighboring stall must change how it displays its goods. In these county stories, such dependencies matter more than the appearance of disorder. The market looks improvised because much of its organization is kept in memory and settled through repeated favors.
What remains after packing
Once the tables are gone, the written market is easier to see. There are damp price cards, a list of orders waiting to be collected and a pitch allocation sheet with corrections at its corners. A name written beneath a stall number may refer to the person paying, the person trading or the person who lent the table.
From the fictional county archive
The corner pitch needs two clips for its awning. Return them to the office tin, not to the next stall.
