Case 9: Manifest
An opening brief from the fictional Coldmere County case files. Cold for 7 years, 1 month. This introduction contains no report, evidence inventory or closing scene.
Bureau opening brief
Kempe, Anton. 36. Night watchman. Coldmere wanted him over a death on Grayhaven Pier. That file is closed, and it was not him. He came north on the Thursday freight with one twenty-foot box, SY 20417, and took the weekend night watch on the collection row at the Stacks, for cash. Found at 7:05 on a Sunday morning, seven years ago, behind the last stack of row K, by the checker who walks the row on Sundays. The Ashport coroner's office: asphyxia, and a struggle before it. Window 10:00 PM Friday to 2:00 AM Sunday. The port police had him seen alive on the Saturday afternoon and filed a robbery by persons unknown. Their letter for his next of kin came back from Coldmere. His phone sat seven years in their property office, locked. Our lab opened it this month. We asked Ashport for his box and for the man who sealed it. Ashport records sent the port police file, the desk book from the post at the Stacks gate and the property office's papers on the box. The Port Authority sent its papers from the ramp and the row. The box was sealed in Coldmere, and the seal record is in the Winter Pier file. The property office records what it finds. Its papers stand. Four names. -V
