The Path Cleared in Winter

A gardener discovers why one unused path was always cleared before the rest.

The maintenance route began with a path that ended at a locked gate. New gardener Sera considered moving it to the bottom of the list. The former gardener's notes insisted that it be cleared first whenever snow fell.

A neighbor explained that the gate once opened onto a small clinic. The route gave patients a gentler climb. The clinic moved years before the gardener died, but he kept clearing the path because several residents still used it to reach the road beyond.

The locked gate was recent. A new owner had closed it without realizing that the path remained in use. Sera brought the old route notes to a meeting, where residents described how they traveled now. They agreed on an accessible alternative and revised the clearing order accordingly.

Sera saved the former gardener's instructions with the new plan. His priority had not been a particular gate; it had been the people approaching it. On the first snowy morning, she cleared the alternative route before the ornamental walks, carrying out the intention in his notes even while departing from the line he drew.
