The Chair by the Woodpile

A forester's chair survives outdoors because of an instruction hidden inside its repair record.

The chair stood beside the woodpile through rain and frost. Its owner had died, and the new caretaker wanted to move it indoors before it rotted. In the repair file, she found his request that it remain where it was.

He used the chair when his legs weakened, sitting halfway between the house and the timber office. A neighbor also rested there on her route to the shops. The request named no memorial purpose. It simply asked that the path continue to have somewhere to stop.

The caretaker, Mira, spoke with the neighbor and arranged a weatherproof replacement at the same point. She repaired the old chair for the small local collection, attaching a copy of the practical request rather than an invented dedication.

The neighbor tried the new seat and asked for one armrest to be lowered. Mira noted the change. The dead forester's instruction had not required everyone after him to tolerate his exact chair. It asked them to preserve a useful pause in a difficult walk, and that purpose could survive in an object he had never seen.
