Empty Berth Office

The Empty Berth Office is an invented marina administration room. Its window overlooks several vacant spaces whose booking cards are nevertheless kept carefully in the active drawer.

The water outside the window

A visitor sees room for another boat. The clerk sees a sequence of promised returns, repair delays and arrangements that have not been canceled in writing. The view does not contradict the drawer. It simply describes the present while the cards record obligations that extend beyond it.

The postcard used as confirmation

One owner sends a postcard instead of the requested form. Its message is friendly and imprecise about the date of return. The clerk clips it to the booking card because it is the only written account available. A scenic picture from elsewhere becomes part of the paperwork governing a small piece of Palewater water.

Moving a card backward

The office sorts expected arrivals by date. Each delay sends a card farther back without removing it entirely. The fiction finds its mood in that repeated adjustment, the difference between believing that a visit is still planned and knowing when it will happen. The drawer becomes a physical record of patience.
