A yard arranged by weight
The heaviest pieces remain nearest the access road. Smaller samples move into sheds, where their labels matter more than their location. A block can sit outside long enough to look like part of the landscape while still belonging to an unfinished order. The district's apparent permanence often consists of work waiting for another decision.
The sample kept after completion
Stoneworkers keep small pieces to match future repairs. A sample drawer becomes an informal history of buildings elsewhere in the county, each offcut linked to an address. Some names remain recognizable after the building's owner changes; others require a second note explaining which older entrance the sample belongs to.
The unfinished edge
A partly dressed stone shows a transition from rough surface to tool marks and finally to a smooth face. The sequence remains visible without a written account. Quarry End's stories place that physical record beside invoices and plans, allowing the material and the paperwork to preserve different stages of the same unfinished task.
From the fictional county archive
Retain this offcut for matching. The approved finish is on the narrow face, not on the weathered surface.
