An address in a shallow drawer
Each piece is paired with a card naming a building and the part supplied. Some cards use earlier building names, so a request for a modern address may not lead directly to the right drawer. The archive requires a memory of the city as well as a knowledge of the material.
The side that matters
A stone can present several finishes. Its weathered face may look unlike the narrow edge preserved inside a joint. A careful sample card identifies which surface was approved. Without that note, a later repair could match the wrong side of a perfectly correct piece of stone.
A missing label recovered
The story follows an unlabeled offcut placed with others of similar color. It is eventually recognized by the unusual shape left where a corner was cut away, not by the color that first seemed important. The recovered card is tied on rather than glued, allowing the sample to be turned over without hiding any part of it.
From the fictional county archive
Former building name retained for cross-reference. Match the sheltered edge; the outer face has changed through exposure.
