The same roof, seen twice
A road turns back on itself sharply enough that a traveler passes above a building visited a few minutes earlier. Its roof is now at eye level. Residents describe homes as upper or lower even when the postal addresses belong to the same street. A visitor who relies on numbers alone can reach the right building at the wrong door.
Rooms between connections
Lodging houses serve people whose journeys pause at the ridge. A room may be needed for a full night or only for the interval between uncertain connections. Proprietors keep coats behind the desk after guests have checked out, allowing the railway's schedule to extend a household's responsibility beyond the written booking.
The luggage route
The shortest pedestrian path includes stairs, so loaded carts take a longer road. A traveler can arrive before their belongings and wait while watching the distant bend. Switchback Quarter lives with this separation of people from the objects accompanying them. Its stories find suspense in a delay that is usually explained by the slope.

Passengers may use the upper steps. Luggage must come by the road; please do not promise that both will arrive together.
