The Signal Without a Train

A signal cabin log records a movement that never appears in the train register.

At 03:12, the cabin log recorded a green signal. The train register showed no departure. When the yard museum opened, visitors treated the discrepancy as the beginning of a ghost story, and the volunteer guide learned to pause at exactly that point.

Then a former fitter brought in a work order. He and the signalman had tested the lamp after a repair, with the line closed and no train expected. The signalman's handwritten note had been separated from the log during an earlier donation. Nothing had moved through the dark except light.

The guide worried that the explanation would spoil his most popular stop. The fitter said the signalman had died before anyone thanked him for staying through the night. A ghost train made a better anecdote, perhaps, but it left the man's actual work out of the story.

At the next tour, the guide showed the work order first. People still leaned toward the window when he described the green light over an empty track. This time they imagined two tired workers checking that it would be safe when a real train finally came.
