The Letter in the Switchboard

A technician finds a private letter routed through the back of an abandoned switchboard.

The envelope had been folded around a cable so tightly that removing it tore the corner. Inside, a young operator apologized for listening to a conversation she should have left alone. No recipient was named.

Ruth, cataloguing the exchange equipment, found the operator's surname on a training list. Her niece supplied a later letter in which the woman described leaving the job. The dates suggested a scandal, but the niece said she left to care for her mother and returned the following year.

The apology might have been sent in another form, or never sent at all. Ruth could not turn the surviving draft into a complete account of what happened. She described it in the catalogue as an unfinished personal letter and retained the cable around which it had been hidden.

At the exhibition, a visitor asked whose conversation the operator overheard. Ruth said the archive did not say. The visitor waited for a more dramatic answer, then read the apology again. Its force did not depend on identifying the strangers at the other end of the line.
