Harbor Letter Office

The Harbor Letter Office is an invented room above Sounding Quay. It holds mail for expected arrivals and occupies an uncertain space between a delivery service, a waiting room and a local favor.

Sorted by expectation

The shelves are labeled with vessel names rather than streets. A person traveling on a different boat can therefore arrive in the bay while their letter remains in the wrong compartment. The clerk's task includes asking questions that the address did not anticipate, connecting a written destination to a journey that changed en route.

The window above the landing

From the office, only the upper steps of the landing are visible. A person appears a little at a time as they climb. Regular visitors call out before reaching the door, and the clerk starts looking for an envelope by recognizing a voice. Delivery is a social act as much as a sorting procedure.

The letter sent back

After several missed arrivals, an envelope is prepared for return. Before it leaves, the expected recipient finally calls at the office. The story's small tension rests on that near crossing of movements, when a sentence almost makes the journey home again without reaching the person for whom it was written.

Held through two expected arrivals. Recipient may have transferred to another vessel. Check at the quay before returning.
