The empty numbered hook
A hook retains its number after the item assigned to it is gone. Visitors may assume that something is missing, while the caretaker knows the wall is no longer an active inventory. The room's apparent incompleteness comes from reading an old system as though it still describes the present.
A token kept with the wrong box
A small numbered token is found among unrelated tools. Its original significance is not immediately recoverable, so it is stored with a note stating where it was found. The caretaker chooses to preserve that modest fact instead of supplying a more satisfying explanation. The story gives uncertainty a proper place in the room's record.
The label added for visitors
A new sign explains that the fittings remain from an earlier use. It does not attempt to reconstruct every absence on the wall. The room becomes easier to understand when its limits are stated plainly, allowing its worn surfaces to carry atmosphere without requiring them to tell a complete or dramatic history.
