The Choir List

A crossed-out name on a choir list conceals a change of role rather than an expulsion.

Her grandmother's name was crossed out in red. Leni found the choir list while preparing a family history and remembered stories about a quarrel with the conductor. The line looked final enough to confirm them.

A second sheet listed rehearsal duties. Her grandmother appeared there as the person responsible for opening the room and setting out music. A letter explained that she stopped singing when her hearing deteriorated but wanted to remain involved. The red line moved her out of one list without removing her from the group.

The quarrel may still have happened. Another singer remembered it clearly, though she placed it years earlier. Leni kept the events separate instead of using the dramatic mark to join them into one satisfying departure.

At the next community concert, she sat near the person handing out programs. Her grandmother's contribution had continued in that less visible part of the room. In the family history, Leni included both lists. Readers could follow the change of role on the page rather than mistake an administrative crossing-out for the moment a whole relationship ended.
