The bottle lay in the exposed basin, sealed with a softened cork. Its note read we were here, followed by three names. A date placed it before the water receded, and one name belonged to a man recently buried in Lowwater.
His son, Theo, contacted the other families. They remembered a youthful outing and a bottle dropped near the old landing, not launched toward distant shores. The message was a private mark of an afternoon, discovered because the place around it changed.
Theo photographed the find location before passing the bottle to the archive. He did not claim to know how far it moved underwater. The note's survival explained little about its route, however tempting it was to imagine a long journey through the reservoir.
The surviving friends came to read it together. They disagreed about the weather and whose idea the bottle had been. All three signatures remained clear. The smallest statement on the page, we were here, was also the one their conflicting memories could still support without amendment.
