Warehouse Seven

Warehouse Seven is an invented storage building in The Saltyard. Its county-archive story follows the paperwork of objects that arrive correctly but are never collected by the person expected.

The unclaimed shelf

The shelf sits above the office door because there is no space left at floor level. A narrow chair is used to reach it. Everything placed there must be light enough for one person to lift while keeping a hand on the doorframe, so larger unclaimed deliveries remain below with handwritten labels tied to them.

An office inside a larger room

The walls stop short of the warehouse roof. Sounds cross over them: a trolley turning, a chain dragging and a question called from the far entrance. The clerk can hear that work continues without seeing which task is being done. The little office window turns the rest of the building into a framed, partial view.

The return that never leaves

One package waits for a corrected address. Each inquiry produces another slip, tucked beneath the same string until the paper bundle is thicker than the original label. Nothing sinister is established. The quiet tension comes from an ordinary system that knows how to receive an object but cannot decide where to send it next.

From the fictional county archive

Address queried. Second letter returned unopened. Keep the wrapping; the writing on it is clearer than the duplicate.
