North Reading Room

The North Reading Room is an invented quiet room at the University of Coldmere. It looks orderly from the doorway, where desk lamps conceal much of what lies in their individual circles of light.

A place kept by an object

A book left open can reserve a seat more effectively than a sign. Around it accumulate a coat, a pencil and a request slip for another volume. Someone entering the room sees evidence of occupation without knowing whether the reader has stepped outside or gone home. The staff wait before clearing a desk because they have been wrong before.

The request that changes meaning

A call number copied in haste may point to a different shelf than intended. The attendant returns with a perfectly reasonable book that answers none of the reader's questions. In this story, the error starts a second line of reading. A wrong turn through an index can still lead to something worth keeping.

Closing the room

At the end of the day, slips are gathered before books are moved. Staff try to preserve the relationship between the requested item and the desk where it was used. The room's apparent stillness rests on this careful, repetitive handling of interrupted attention, long after the people who created it have left.

From the fictional county archive

Do not separate loose request slips from the books on reserved desks. The reader may return without remembering the shelf number.
