The original on the counter
The clerk asks that staples be removed before a document is handed over. Some visitors have already done so; others worry that separating the sheets will change their standing as an original. A small tray holds bent staples beside a sign explaining a procedure that does not entirely answer that anxiety.
What the copy can show
A reproduction preserves words more easily than texture. A crease becomes a dark line; pale pencil can disappear; the raised impression of a stamp becomes an uneven shadow. In the county fiction, a resident returns because the new copy does not show a correction visible when the original is held toward the window.
The reverse of the page
The back of an old form carries an additional note. It looks unimportant until the clerk asks whether it should be copied too. The decision is practical, modest and consequential for what the next reader will see. The room's work is a series of such choices made beneath the appearance of a mechanical task.
From the fictional county archive
Copy both sides, including the blank margin with the initials. Do not trim the edge to match the newer paper size.
