The new pane
A replacement window is clearer than the glass beside it. People inside unconsciously prefer that side when looking toward the yard. The room's furniture has shifted to match, leaving a pale rectangle where a cabinet once stood. A modest repair has changed the way the whole office observes the entrance.
The visitor without a vehicle
The printed log expects a vehicle number. A visitor arriving on foot leaves that box empty and writes a reason for the visit in the next one. The clerk adds a small note so that a later reader will not mistake the blank for an incomplete entry. The story turns on the care taken with a person who does not fit the form.
The view behind the book
The counter is high enough that an open log blocks part of the window for a seated clerk. Recording and watching cannot happen in exactly the same way at the same moment. The archive fiction uses that physical detail to give the room character, without turning it into a claim about a particular game case.
From the fictional county archive
Window replaced on yard side. Old frame retained until the missing latch has been matched.
